The Irish American community has strong historic connections with many of America’s Catholic colleges. For many students, attending one is an excellent way to combine a rigorous education with a spiritual support system that makes the transition from living at home to a college campus just that much easier.
USA Today has released a ranked list of the nation’s 10 ten Catholic colleges to aid High School students still pondering where they should apply. The list is compiled using rankings provided by College Factual which uses various outcomes such as graduation rates, starter salaries, and loan default rates to rate colleges.

Taking the gold medal is the University of Notre Dame. The South Bend, Indianacollege remains one of the great Irish American institutions in this country and its sports teams are known for the pride with which they bear the name Fighting Irish.
It takes its Catholic identity very seriously. Students can still attend regular Mass if they want to and the university makes clear on its website that one of its “distinctive goals is to provide a forum where, through free inquiry and open discussion, the various lines of Catholic thought may intersect with all the forms of knowledge.”
Notre Dame offers 65 undergraduate courses and College Factual rates its fees as “good.” Currently, it will cost you $184,000 to obtain a degree from Notre Dame (unless you get a scholarship) compared with $210,000 it’ll cost you to attend Chicago's Northwestern University, by way of comparison.

With a name like that who could doubt its Catholic roots or ethos? The school is located in New England’s second biggest city, Worcester, MA.
This Jesuit College offers students the chance to get a strong Liberal Arts education in a small, intimate environment with only some 2,700 fellow classmates.
A couple of years ago, it was ranked as one of the best value Liberal Arts college in the US and its annual tuition is currently $48,000 per annum.

The nation’s oldest Jesuit and Catholic university, Georgetown is almost as ancient as the United States itself. The college has an illustrious reputation and unrivaled political connections with the White House and US Congress just around the corner. Bill Clinton went to college here, and he still drops by now and again. Students frequently get internships with politicians, which is how Huma Abedin (who would probably have become Hillary’s Chief of Staff) got her first job with the then First Lady. Who knows, that could be you?
Without financial aid tuition comes to $46,000 a year – and you get a beautiful campus to study at too!

Boston College is another proud Jesuit school and its stunningly beautiful campus is almost a good enough reason alone to go to college there. Its buildings are, in fact, some of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture in North America.
It has a high freshman graduation rate and tuition (without aid) will set you back $50,000 a year.

This Philadelphia area school places a strong emphasis on community service – something it credits its Catholic traditions with. The college is packed with history and is allegedly linked by secret tunnels to local hospitals. Apparently they were built during the Civil War, but their existence is disputed, so it's unlikely they’ll be your shortcut to class when you’re running late.
Fees at the school without aid are $65,000 per annum.

Another prestigious Jesuit institution. Santa Clara is located in the heart of Silicon Valley and the university has a well-earned reputation for churning out Fulbright Scholars and all from an welcoming environment of 9,000 students. 
It’s also stunning: in 2012 Santa Clara University was ranked as the second most beautiful college in all the United States. And with that beauty you also get some relatively low fees at $43,000 a year without financial aid.

Providence College is another beautiful school to make our list. Set in the chocolate box perfect town in Rhode Island that it gets its name from, students learn in an intimate environment with only 4,000 other peers. It is the only North American college to be administered by Dominican Friars.
Its fees, without financial aid, are $44,000 and reach $59,000 once room and board are thrown in.

Are you a boy? If so you can’t attend the College of Saint Benedict. CSB in the aptly named town of Collegeville, MN is an all women's college, although it has strong links to the all-male St John’s University.
The colleges are jointly home to the famous St. John’s Bible and the college is still run on Benedictine values.
Tuition without financial aid is $43,000 a year which is a few hundred dollars lower than what the boys across the street pay.

It’s not necessary to be Catholic and people who aren’t religious at all won’t feel excluded, but it is especially amazing for people who are religious. I myself am not very religious but was raised in the faith and do appreciate it, so I enjoyed being around it and taking the required Theology and Philosophy courses. Everyone is extremely nice and collaborative! Very smart people here and caring professors. Single sex dorms is a negative as well as less opportunities for medical professions, as there is no hospital or medical focus here. I would say it’s best for business, engineering, or liberal arts. I have also just realized that LMU is ranked 3rd in the West. Lastly, if safety is one of your main concerns? Don't worry! I have been feeling safe since day 1. I love it here!

SLU is an extremely open college where you will meet people from diverse backgrounds who have different experiences. Of course, people will always complain and say that the "rich white people" surround SLU. However, if you actually try and engage in the SLU community you will find more than just that. SLU has given me life long friends and an education that I am proud of. So far my classes have gone well and are usually well taught. If there are any complaints, there are always surveys at the end of the semester that go straight to the department heads for review. Finding the right college for you is difficult. The location is perfect with having a urban lifestyle with suburban people. The campus is located only 1 mile away from Lake Michigan for summer fun and there are also numerous activities that can be done during the summer months, such as going to their D1 basketball team. Everyone has great school spirit and safety is tremendous since they have an almost 24 hour limo service that will ensure that you make it back to your dorm after a cheer-filled game or long night of studying in their wonderful library.     Alum: I went to the "U" in September 1960 and got elected Vice President of my class and I put my energies into ROTC and the college newspaper, The Aquinas," as the Business Manager. My Senior year I became the Photography Editor of the Windhover, the college yearbook. I was selected to be in the senior program for ROTC. ROTC was mandatory for physically draft eligible (One-A) students during Freshman and Sophomore years. (250 applied and 70 were selected for the commissioning program). I did not attend ROTC Summer Camp at Indiantown Gap until after graduation. During my senior year I served as an ROTC Company Commander. I completed camp successfully and was commissioned as a 2LT of Infantry in the Army Reserve. I did well in my leadership training and was designated an "Distinguished Military Graduate," which allowed me to get a Regular Army commission.     Niche User: I'm the parent of a Rockhurst sophomore and feel like the university has been an excellent choice for my daughter, and she agrees. Its a close knit school and very friendly csmpus. Academics are very good with small class sizes. My daughter, who is African American, has made friends of all sorts and is involved in a lot. Sure, it does not have the big school sports scene but the college was top ranked in division two in severals sports. Security seems tight so far and there's a real emphasis on community service. If you want a school where the student will not get lost in a crowd and will get a very good foundation, Rockhurst is an under the radar gem with well respected academics as with most Jesuit colleges.     Junior: I originally came to USF as a nursing major as their nursing program is very highly ranked. I ended up changing majors to biology my sophomore year and am so happy I did. I have loved my class here and have had some of the best teachers with exceptional experience in their field. Moreover, I have made relationships with friends that will be life long. The party scene and Greek life here is not very big, so if that's what you're looking for in a school, you may want to evaluate your choices. What you lose in the party/Greek scene, however, you gain in the amazing setting that is San Francisco and all the activities it has to offer.     Freshman: I really love SNC! The campus is beautiful and so clean. The people are all wonderful and unbelievably polite. The academics are great and very diverse, with the teachers being very involved, even if they sometimes forget office hours. I do not go to parties, but I have heard from friends the sober parties are very fun and they have a great time there! I am no athlete, but my friends seem to really enjoy the athletic program here. The teachers are amazing and they really add to the overall experience. I feel very safe here, there have been a few reports of "attacks" on campus, but each time, people are physically injured. The food here is delicious and I have definitely gained my freshman 15, but no worries, the new fitness center is almost complete, so I won't have to worry about gaining any more weight! Campus is small, which Is a bit of a personal negative, but it’s gorgeous and most of the time I am really thankful it’s so quick to get around. My professors have been friendly, genuinely passionate about their subjects and invested in my progress. The food is AMAZING for campus food - It regularly changes and encompasses different ethnic foods. For the School of Education specifically, I can say the advisors are quirky and fun and up for casual check ins and in prompt to drop ins from their advisees.     Freshman: I love the area and the people in town. Everyone is very nice and talkative at the school! There are countless resources for the students to use to help them learn and understand the materials they learn in every college and department. There are also resources for inclusiveness and to help the students stay involved within the school and its atmosphere. I chose the program in which we are required to physically come to class at Manhattan College; I'm so happy I chose this path since I enjoyed the in-person learning, made great friends, and life-long connections. The class size was excellent, 12:1, it's the perfect ratio for students to engage in fulfilling discussion, and get the attention we need from the professor. I could see that the program did their best to select faculty members that come from the best of the best in their field, I genuinely learned a lot and had a great experience. Despite the high acceptance rate, the academics are challenging yet interesting, and therefore worthwhile. Loyola's core curriculum, although intimidating at first, is extremely valuable in ensuring every student's education is well rounded (plus it helps to break up the classes for your major, which certainly helps me to stay focused by doing something different). I myself am not very religious but was raised in the faith and do appreciate it, so I enjoyed being around it and taking the required Theology and Philosophy courses. Single sex dorms is a negative as well as less opportunities for medical professions, as there is no hospital or medical focus here. I would say it’s best for business, engineering, or liberal arts. SLU is an extremely open college where you will meet people from diverse backgrounds who have different experiences. Of course, people will always complain and say that the "rich white people" surround SLU. However, if you actually try and engage in the SLU community you will find more than just that. SLU has given me life long friends and an education that I am proud of. So far my classes have gone well and are usually well taught. If there are any complaints, there are always surveys at the end of the semester that go straight to the department heads for review. Finding the right college for you is difficult. ROTC was mandatory for physically draft eligible (One-A) students during Freshman and Sophomore years. (250 applied and 70 were selected for the commissioning program). I did not attend ROTC Summer Camp at Indiantown Gap until after graduation. During my senior year I served as an ROTC Company Commander. Academics are very good with small class sizes. My daughter, who is African American, has made friends of all sorts and is involved in a lot. Sure, it does not have the big school sports scene but the college was top ranked in division two in severals sports. Security seems tight so far and there's a real emphasis on community service. If you want a school where the student will not get lost in a crowd and will get a very good foundation, Rockhurst is an under the radar gem with well respected academics as with most Jesuit colleges. I do not go to parties, but I have heard from friends the sober parties are very fun and they have a great time there! I am no athlete, but my friends seem to really enjoy the athletic program here. The teachers are amazing and they really add to the overall experience. I feel very safe here, there have been a few reports of "attacks" on campus, but each time, people are physically injured. The food here is delicious and I have definitely gained my freshman 15, but no worries, the new fitness center is almost complete, so I won't have to worry about gaining any more weight!
